One suggestion to relieve the discomforts of aging, is yoga. All it
really takes is a yoga mat and a place to lay it down. There are lots of
routines on Youtube.
But first, I recommend reading The Yoga Perspective
... a short article I copied from Yoga Journal that really explains how
to approach the practice itself. You don't have to twist yourself into a pretzel to profit from yoga practice.
If you want to have a mild, but fun exercise, I also like AM Chi (Tai Chi) too. It's about 10 minutes, and would be a nice, mild start to see if you like yoga-ish stretching.
If you want to gradually work up to a regular yoga practice that's a little more demanding, I used to do Rodney Yee's AM Yoga for Your Week. It also comes on a
DVD with five ~25 minute routines that are great to
start the day. The streaming is available through the Hoopla phone or
computer app if you have a library card, and the DVD may be available in
the
Sacramento Public Library. (In addition to the mat, you'll need a belt or tie for Rodney
Yee's stuff).
Finally, the long-ish yoga routine that is perfection in asana calling is the Sivananda Basic Practice.
There are 30 and 60 minute versions of this on Youtube too, but the 90-minute practice feels wonderful and saved me from a painful pinched nerve, and appears to have prevented it from coming back [knocks
wood].
Anyway, these help you maintain youthful fitness, and experience the pleasure of a healthy
body. Diet changes can bring pretty fast results, especially if you are lactose intolerant, but most of this
exercise "plants a seed," so please expect to be patient. You can't plant
an acorn and expect a mighty oak the next day...so plan to take your
time.
