Here's a Fresh Air interview with Kevin Kruse, who covers the marketing of the U.S. as a "Christian Nation." His book One Nation Under God: How Corporate America Invented Christian America describes this in more detail. Sounds pretty fascinating to me.
After
the New Deal, corporate America argues / markets the notion that
capitalism and Christianity are soul mates, unified in a kind of
Christian libertarianism. Like "Christianity" (please ignore salvation
by grace), capitalism rewards people according to their merits. This is a
distortion of both kinds of religiosity, particularly removing any
reference to the dangers of wealth. The New Deal was seen as "pagan
statism.""Only puny secrets need protection. Big discoveries are protected by public incredulity." - Marshall McLuhan
How can you ask for what you want, much less get it, if you don't know the words?
